“Am I the Asshole for Telling My Sister’s Fiancé Exactly Why She Was ‘Working Late’ for Six Months?”

I (26F) have always been close with my sister, “Maya” (29F). Maya is the high-achiever of the family—the one who always has the perfect job, the perfect hair, and, until last week, the perfect fiancé, “Mark” (30M).

Mark is a genuinely great guy. He’s a nurse who works grueling shifts and spent his entire savings on Maya’s dream engagement ring. They were set to marry in three months. For the last half-year, Maya has been “buried in work.” She told Mark she was gunning for a senior partner position at her firm, which meant staying at the office until 10 or 11 PM most weeknights. Mark, being the supportive partner he is, would have dinner waiting for her every night and even took on all the wedding planning chores so she wouldn’t “burn out.”

The problem? I work across the street from her office. Three weeks ago, I saw Maya’s car parked at a high-end boutique hotel at 9 PM. I thought it was a work event until I saw her walking into the lobby with a man who was definitely not Mark.

I confronted her the next day. Maya didn’t even try to deny it. She admitted she’s been having an affair with a guy she met at the gym for six months. She told me she “needed to get it out of her system” before committing to Mark forever. She begged me to stay quiet, saying she was ending it that week and that telling Mark would only “unnecessarily hurt him.”

I tried to keep the secret for four days. I couldn’t look Mark in the eye when they came over for dinner. He was talking about how hard Maya was working for their future, and Maya just sat there, nodding and acting exhausted.

I snapped. I asked Mark to go for a walk. I told him everything—the hotel, the “gym guy,” and the fact that Maya hadn’t worked a late night in months.

Mark went home and called off the engagement immediately. Now, my entire family is in an uproar. My parents are calling me a “traitor” and a “home-wrecker,” saying that every marriage has humps and I should have let Maya handle her own business. Maya is staying at a friend’s house and has blocked me on everything, claiming I ruined her life because of my “jealousy.”

Mark thanked me, but he’s a shell of a man right now. My mom says I should have prioritized “blood over truth.”
